One of our goals throughout this process is that you know all of the possible outcomes of the underwriting process so that you have no surprises going into it. Knowing all of these options will allow us to form a strategy around your application and to be prepared for what else you we may need to submit in order to give you the best opportunity to obtain the insurance policy (personal letter, letters of recommendation from doctors, medical records, etc.).
Individual health insurance plans are medically underwritten. This means that the insurance carrier(s) will review your medical history and can decide to do one of three things:
1) The carrier can approve your application at the preferred rate - the rate that is quoted to you.
(The rates you receive from me are the same rates you would receive from the carrier.
I do not have a broker fee.)
2) The carrier can decline your application due to your medical history.
3) The carrier can approve your application with surcharges due to to your medical history.
Each condition and treatment (including Rx) can receive a separate surcharge.
***Kaiser Permanente will only approve you at the quoted rate or decline your application due to your medical history. This sometimes makes Kaiser a bit more difficult to obtain insurance through if you have any extensive medical history. (Anthem can surcharge up to 100% of premium, I've seen Blue Shield surcharge up to 300% of premium, and I've seen Cigna surcharge up to 150% of premium.)
Please be advised...It is imperative and necessary that you give full disclosure of any and all medical conditions and medications on your application - not only to obtain, but also to retain your medical insurance benefits. The insurance carriers can retroactively cancel your policy once it is in force if they find that you had left information off of your original application.
